Barona Council Gives to the S.E.A. Experience
Thanks to a grant from the Barona Band of
Mission Indians, each year, schools throughout
California receive thousands of dollars in
educational funding toward the purchase of
much-needed teaching supplies like books and
computers.
At a reception held last year at S.E.A. Girl’s
Academy, attended by Los Angeles City Council
Member Ed Reyes, the Barona Council presented
S.E.A. with a whopping $75,000 grant for books,
which will benefit thousands of students. S.E.A. is grateful to the Barona Council for its
generosity and continued support. |

Leadership, Character, and Authenticity
Warren Bennis, a distinguished professor of business
administration at the University of Southern
California writes that, “Timeless leadership is always
about character, and it is always about authenticity.”
S.E.A. believes in the importance of building student
character and helping them find authenticity as they
evolve into leaders.
On 17 December 2008, sixty-five S.E.A. youth
attended “The Dream Big” leadership workshop in
the City of Commerce. The workshop taught
students about accountability and responsibility for their own actions, and about the various
ways in which individuals mask their true feelings for self preservation. It also enabled youth to
identify goals, and project themselves ten years into the future. Students were asked to share
their projected dreams with the rest of the group as if they were experiencing these in the
present.
Since the workshop, S.E.A. staff has seen a decrease in school disciplinary problems; an increase
in students’ interest for their education and goals; and more importantly, a shift in student
attitude from victim to one of responsibility for the choices made. |

Project HOPE
Students from S.E.A.’s Norwalk and South Gate sites will
participate in campus tours, biomedical career fairs and
symposiums, and much more thanks to a new partnership
with Cerritos College and a $20,000 grant from the Irvine
Foundation. The program aims to create awareness among
youth about careers in the medical field, and provide new
opportunities that encourage students to consider college
as a viable career path after high school graduation. |

Youth Peace and Reconciliation
Thanks to an exciting new partnership between
S.E.A., TELACU and FuturoNow, students can attend
communication and conflict management
workshops offered through S.E.A.’s Peace and
Reconciliation program. These workshops enable
youth to identify destructive behavioral patterns
that can threaten relationships, and provide tools to
address issues that can “push your buttons.”
The Peace and Reconciliation program brings
together community organizations that educate
youth about ways to minimize their environmental
impact, and provide a safe and trusting
environment where youth can develop leadership
skills, while improving self-esteem and addressing
attitudes or beliefs that hamper growth.
A generous grant from the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Carondolet, enabled Flor Gonzalez (a spring 09
graduate of S.E.A.’s Girls Academy) and Maria
Montenegro (a parent of a former student) to
participate in this year’s camp team.

S.E.A. Student Featured on Biz Kid$ Show
Last year, we announced that S.E.A. Girls Academy student,
Evelyn Espinoza, won top honors for her venture Hippies
Candles at the Merryl Lynch/ Network for Teaching
Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Greater Los Angeles Regional Youth
Business Plan Competition.
Espinoza, who beat hundreds of contestants for the top spot at
the regional competition, has since been featured as a young
entrepreneur on Fox Business, The Los Angeles Times, and,
more recently, on public television station KOCE-TV’s Biz Kid$
Show (Channel 8 or 16). She will be featured in a second
segment of “The Art of Negotiation” on Tuesday, March 10, at
11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The NFTE is a youth program that teaches entrepreneurial skills
using exciting, experiential curriculum in a variety of settings. Through NFTE, students get to
participate in business plan competitions at the local, regional and national levels. The national
competition culminates in New York City with the awarding of grants at an annual awards
dinner.
